Synergy between ozonation and GAC filtration for chlorinated ethenes-contaminated groundwater treatment

Chlorinated ethenes are among the most frequently occurring groundwater contaminants. Pump and granular activated carbon (GAC) treatment is applied to limit spreading from point contaminations. Perchloroethene (PCE) trichloroethene (TCE) sorb well GAC, but dichloroethene (DCE) vinyl chloride (VC) poorly, thereby defining a low efficiency seen as amounts of GAC used. On other hand, ozone reacts fast with VC DCE, slowly PCE TCE. We utilise for first time synergy between ozonation treat chlorinated ethenes-contaminated an upgrade existing installation. Laboratory experiments confirmed that trans-DCE could be >90% removed just 0.23 g O 3 /m , corresponding 0.18 mg /mg DOC. For cis-DCE, 1,1-DCE TCE, doses 0.86, 0.87 2.8 DOC, respectively, were required remove 90%. In full-scale, completely 1.6 while only 90% cis-DCE 50% TCE this dose.
